Seabed Mining

While extraction of solid mineral deposits from the sea floor is not a new idea, it has not been actually done until now.  An increasing demand for gold, copper, and rare-earth metals (for things like smart phones and iPads) has made the high cost of undersea mining feasible, and publicly-traded companies have already obtained exploration rights throughout the world.

Deep Seabed Mining is not only possible, but very probable within the next few years as companies develop and construct specialized ships and submersibles to reach the seafloor.  The images below describe the exploration efforts of Nautilus Minerals, whose “Solwara One” project is set to begin off the coast of New Ireland, PNG, in early 2019.
